Relocation, Relocation (C4) to Scotland for Tom and Fiona
Newly married Tom and Fiona Butcher wanted to leave London and move 450 miles to Scotland to buy a place in Glasgow and another near Loch Lomond, where Tom could start a ceramics business.
So, in 2003, they sold their two-bedroom London flat for £285,000, giving them £75,000 profit after just two years. They wanted to spend £100,000 on a city pad, possibly as an investment to rent out eventually, and £150,000 on somewhere in the country.
Channel Four's Kirstie Allsopp and Phil Spencer lent a hand to find them suitable accommodation.
However, Tom and Fiona proved unwilling to take advice. Not only did they decide to spend all their cash on one country house, but they ignored Phil's advice to play a tactical waiting game with the vendor. They wanted the property so much that they approached the seller direct to make him an offer he couldn't refuse. The deal was done for £280,000
Now Tom and Fiona live at Mansefield house where Tom crafts desirable ceramic objects d'art.
