The Canal Centre at Lock 57

Whilst in Cheshire why not visit the Canal Centre and Tea room at Hassall Green.
Take the 2 mile circular walk and return for a well-deserved meal!

We are located off the M6 Junction 17. Spend some time watching the Narrowboats working their way through the locks, walking the towpath, browsing in the gift shop or enjoying teas on the lawn. You can also watch the traffic on the M6 which is just far enough away to avoid troublesome noise!

Vistra Marina, Hassall Green, Sandbach, Cheshire.

Completed in 1777, the Trent and Mersey Cmal links the Bridgewater Canal near Runcorn with the River Trent, 93 miles away. Designed by the great Canal engineer James Brindley, it was one of the earliest major canals in the country.

Halfway up "Heartbreak Hill", the thirty locks that lift the canal from the Cheshire plain to Harecastle Hill near Stoke-on-Trent, lies Hassall Green.

The shop and house were built at the same time as the canal, 'circa' 1777.

The shop has catered for working boatmen and now holiday boats for nearly two centuries; the present shop building used to be the local bakery and stables.

Circular walk using disused railway line, canal tow path and local lanes:

Turn left out of the Lock 57 car park, cross the canal and walk down the hill past the pink church.

Look out for lunatic drivers! This is a 30mph restricted zone but not many drivers appear to know.

Walk under the motorway and turn left onto the disused railway line. This is the "Salt Way" and used to be used for hauling salt to the factories. The railway lines are long gone and the route can be muddy in places. After walking half a mile (from the Canal Centre) you will reach a tarmac road. Turn left and walk along this road until it reaches another road. Turn left again and follow the road for half a mile until you reach the Potters Barn. Have a browse around the shop and watch the potters at work. Now you can continue along the road for a short distance to the bridge that crosses the canal. Here you can descend to the canal path (left) and return to the Canal Centre for a welcome meal!
